Happy Newton's Day!

0gvM8

I didn't have time to write a Newton's Day post this year, so I give you some posts from past years: here, here, here, and here.

And Merry Christmas!

Was hoping this would show up! Like countless other rationalists and secular humanists, I'm taking the day in bed with my poodle. xoxoxo

Alhamodolillah. Truly one of the greatest minds who ever lived. Merry Newtonmas

December 25 is birthday of another great person, Jinnah, founder of Pakistan.

Merry Chrisma. . .er Newton's day (Newtmas? Christon? Chrewmtas?)
Thanks for a great year 3QD and co.! Much love from normally sunny but now rainy California! Hope everyone else has been enjoying their families and friends as much as I have. . .and again to all my friends at 3QD, May your year be naturally selected for positive traits!

Happy Chrewmtas! (That one was my favorite. . .just say it out loud)

I get the point.

Many influential people were born on December 25.

One from ancient Iran is most mysteriously influential in influential military war colleges under an assumed name.

Raza, I take the view that Jinnahbhoy was not born on 25th December. I like to think that his dad just picked that as a nice date for a birthday when he got him registered for school. You know how it works in our part of the world, where European record keeping mania is relatively new. Do a count of old ladies born on January 1st and you will see what I mean. I know a couple myself and neither was born Jan 1st (well, there is a 1/365 chance that they were, but thats it).
That Newton himself was born January 4th per our new system of dates doesnt matter to me. That Christ may not have been born on Christmas does not bother me one bit. But Jinnahbhoy, now there I draw the line...

Posted by: omar | Dec 26, 2012 10:34:12 AM

Omar,

There is nothing sacred about December 25th (except your own European worldview) that you should have any objection to anyone you don't like being born on that date. Seems like you are a "Birther" of sorts.

Secondly, unless you have any proof that Jinnah's father forged that date, you should not be making specific accusations even if there are many cases of dates being forged, just as you would not be expecting anyone to accuse you or me for forging our birth dates without any proof, even if it was their business to question.

Third, you can draw the line on Jinnah or anyone else, but then you are nobody, which gives you the freedom to do and say anything you want. Responsible people say responsible things.

Posted by: Raza Husain | Dec 26, 2012 11:56:21 AM

Wow, dude, that was a joke. I dont care whether Jinnahbhoy was born on Newtonday or not. Relax.
btw, nice use of the "European worldview". I may be nobody, but I have already converted you to using "european worldview" as a joke that can be inserted into ANY conversation with 100% accuracy. One lives for these moments of triumph.

Posted by: omar | Dec 26, 2012 2:13:18 PM

btw, I was wrong to joke about dad picking Christmas as his birthday on registering him for school. His school records actually do NOT say December 25th. In school records he was noted as being born on October 20th. This was later changed to December 25th for some reason. I wonder if dad had it changed or Jinnahbhoy improved the date himself?
I dont own the books referenced here (http://waspaki.wordpress.com/category/jinnah/) , so maybe some Jinnah fan can tell us more.
Enquiring minds want to know.

Omar , being a Jamaatia will always find reference to satisfy his cynicism.

Posted by: Nasreen R | Dec 26, 2012 4:49:52 PM

Nasreen, Raza bhai helped too, but you have really made my day. Jamaatia..and European worldviewist. All on the same day.
I love it.

Posted by: omar | Dec 26, 2012 4:53:15 PM

It is possible for a confused person to be a Jamaatia..and European worldviewist, all on the same day, like self hating abcds, you know. Just sayin.

Posted by: Raza Husain | Dec 26, 2012 6:00:01 PM

O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay! First the European worldview, then a jamaatia, and now self-hating ABCD.
Could the day get any better?
Well, it could. I am still waiting for "native informant".

Omar, I think you deserve some oysters and Champagne now. You've been in far too many mindsets today -- uphill work, even if the only place you do it is in the imaginings of others.

Posted by: Elatia Harris | Dec 26, 2012 10:28:04 PM

Uh, happy new year everyone? What the HELL did I miss in the content of this post that lead to this absurd comment thread?

Elatia -
Champagne and oysters sound good.

“Oh, come with old Khayyám, and leave the Wise
To talk; one thing is certain, that Life flies
One thing is certain, and the Rest is Lies;
The flower that once has blown for ever dies.”

--The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám
Edward Fitzgerald translation, First version 1859

I'm with you in your confusion, DrunktankDan! There seems to be quite a lot of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

In any case, happy new year to you too! :-)
