In Gun debate, a misguided focus on mental illness
Richard Friedman, M.D. in The New York Times:
In the wake of the terrible shooting at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn., national attention has turned again to the complex links between violence, mental illness and gun control. The gunman, Adam Lanza, 20, has been described as a loner who was intelligent and socially awkward. And while no official diagnosis has been made public, armchair diagnosticians have been quick to assert that keeping guns from getting into the hands of people with mental illness would help solve the problem of gun homicides. Arguing against stricter gun-control measures, Representative Mike Rogers, Republican of Michigan and a former F.B.I. agent, said, “What the more realistic discussion is, ‘How do we target people with mental illness who use firearms?’ ” Robert A. Levy, chairman of the Cato Institute, told The New York Times: “To reduce the risk of multivictim violence, we would be better advised to focus on early detection and treatment of mental illness.”
But there is overwhelming epidemiological evidence that the vast majority of people with psychiatric disorders do not commit violent acts. Only about 4 percent of violence in the United States can be attributed to people with mental illness.
...Perhaps more significant, we are not very good at predicting who is likely to be dangerous in the future. According to Dr. Michael Stone, professor of clinical psychiatry at Columbia and an expert on mass murderers, “Most of these killers are young men who are not floridly psychotic. They tend to be paranoid loners who hold a grudge and are full of rage.”

Short and to the point.
Let's move on to something else, like the absence, even after all that has happened, of any national database of information that is actually meaningful. Every time I hear the term "background check" my only thought is WTF!
Whatever is being called a "background check" is not much better than an astrologer's prediction.

Interesting data. But one must wonder, are not "paranoid loners who hold a grudge and are full of rage" suffering from some mental disorder? Simply b/c there is no catchy DSM-IV label for it does not mean there is no concrete, identifiable neurological disorder that must account for a constant state of paranoia driven diabolical rage. Surely.

Maybe paranoia in the US is ubiquitous and the ultimate example of paranoia is carrying an assault weapon in order to defend.

Understanding the actual pathology of the kind of tragedy that, most recently, visited Connecticut, itself being so far removed from "the vast majority of homicides," doesn't appear to be on anyone's agenda. The "vast majority" of Americans have continually demonstrated their general indifference to "the vast majority of homicides," who commits them, the motives, and, especially, the weaponry involved. There is a possibility the "conversation" may now move beyond the usual bourgeois bullshit, but with the media and the general public stuck in "weapon focus" and politicians promising to take the lead, the agenda will most likely remain exploitation and politicalization.
It's easier to get a gun than healthcare in America. After all the Liberal Outrage, crocodile tears and fear mongering is over, I seriously doubt that will change. Change, in America, will only happen if it's connected to profit. If there's no money in it...forget about it.

It has become clear that some psychotropic drugs used to treat so-called "mental illness" can trigger aggression, suicide and homicide:

Most drunks on the road don't cause accidents, either, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't try to catch them.

"According to Dr. Michael Stone, professor of clinical psychiatry at Columbia and an expert on mass murderers, 'Most of these killers are young men who are not floridly psychotic. They tend to be paranoid loners who hold a grudge and are full of rage.'”
There aren't simple solutions. It's that simple!
BTW the term used to describe that rage is narcissistic rage, which happens to be a non-psychotic event.

Uh... I'm going to go ahead and say that 100% of rampaging murderous maniacs are showing strong signs of psychosis.

If you guys want some serious insight into the idiocy behind the anti gun control debate then look no further than the comments section of the yahoo article I am about to post.
Yahoo isn't a perfect cross section of america, more like the dumbest of the dumb (seriously, how fucking stupid do you have to be to use Yahoo as a source of provocative thought pieces and insightful editorial copy?). Anyways, without further ado, here is why America is fucked reason #153 (the comments section):

Maybe people should think about such cases before slurping up their soma:
