3QD Philosophy Prize 2011 Finalists
Hello,
The editors of 3QD have made their decision. The twenty semifinalists have been winnowed down to six, and three wildcard entries added. Thanks again to all the participants.
Once again, Carla Goller has provided a "trophy" logo that our finalists may choose to display on their own blogs. And if you like our site, please do add us to your blogroll!
So, here it is, the final list that I am sending to Patricia Churchland, who will select the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prize winners: (in alphabetical order by blog name here)
3 Quarks Daily: Why should we care about Kant?
- Brains: Has Molyneux's Question Been Answered?
- Evolving Thoughts: More on phenomena
- PEA Soup: Scanlon on Blame, Part 3: Criminal Blame and Meaning
- PEA Soup: Williams, Thick Concepts, and Reasons
- Philotropes: Singer's problem for heroes
- Sprachlogik: Sketch of a Way of Thinking about Modality
- The Kindly Ones: Demarcation's revisited demise
- Tomkow: Self Defense
We'll announce the three winners on or around September 19, 2011.
Good luck!
Abbas
P.S. The editors of 3QD will not be making any comments on our deliberations, or the process by which we made our decision, other than to simply say that we picked what we thought were the best posts out of the semifinalists, and added three others which we also liked.

interesting that a number of the finalists did not appear on your list of semifinalists. this might indicate that the editors of 3 quarks daily, a blog that i love, might be taking advantage of their position in the contest proceedings.

Tim,
Since you looked at the list of semifinalists, you might have seen the following paragraph there:
"The editors of 3 Quarks Daily will now pick the top six entries from these, and after possibly adding up to three "wildcard" entries, will send that list of finalists to Patricia Churchland for final judging."
This is also clearly spelled out in the rules of the original prize announcement, and has worked the same way for all our prizes. Yes, we get to add upto three "wildcard" entries. This is essentially to ensure that really excellent entries do not get overlooked because they could, for some reason, not muster enough votes.

What did the panel make of the posts by Common Sense Atheism, Philosophy Bro and The Constructive Curmudgeon?

As a special request:
Please include a work by Eliezer Yudkowsky as one of the wild cards.
Yudkowsky is one of the greatest contemporary philosophers. His posts can be found at LessWrong. He is the equivalent of a PhD and the philosophy work that he is doing is as important as anything by Parfit or Williams.
Please consider Yudkowsky.

Jonathan H,
As the last paragraph of the post above states, we don't comment on individual posts or give out grades.
Sandra,
It is too late to include anyone this year, and the wildcards have already been added and the finalists sent to Patricia Churchland for final judging. Do nominate him for the prize next year.
Thanks.

I am surprised that "The Goal of Philosophy Should Be To Kill Itself" did not make it to the finals. It struck me as one of the five most substantive posts there. It is on par with Timothy Williamson's writings about the philosophy of philosophy.
