3QD Politics Prize 2009 Finalists

Politis finalist Hello,

The editors of 3QD have made their decision. The twenty semifinalists have been winnowed down to six. Thanks again to all the participants.

Once again, Carla Goller has provided a "trophy" logo that our finalists may choose to display on their own blogs. And if you like our site, please do add us to your blogroll!

So, here it is, the final list that I am sending to Mr. Tariq Ali, who will select the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prize winners: (in alphabetical order by blog name here)

  1. 3 Quarks Daily: Embers from my Neighbor’s House
  2. Black Agenda Report: The Great Black Hajj of 2009
  3. Glenn Greenwald: Greg Craig and Obama's worsening civil liberties record
  4. Justin E. H. Smith: On Criticizing Israel
  5. News From the Zona: Republican Virtue and Equality
  6. Wisdom of the West: Blunderbuss

We'll announce the three winners on December 21, 2009.

Good luck!

Abbas

P.S. The editors of 3QD will not be making any comments on our deliberations, or the process by which we made our decision, other than to simply say that we picked what we thought were the best posts out of the semifinalists.

I haven't been following this -- clicked through and thought Good Lord I'm not going to read twenty politics blog posts in a day -- but isn't it a conflict of interest that you include your own site? I mean it's difficult, but the one here seems a token that you didn't want to exclude yourselves completely, but if I was the author (who should be named here, in addition to the site where the piece appeared), I'd be a bit annoyed at knowing I was not going to win because, even if Tariq Ali is picking the winner, 3QD would be red-faced if it gave its own prize to someone who in some sense works for them.

Jack,

3QD essentially functions as two seperate things: as a filter blog six days a week, and then as a magazine of original writing on Mondays. Since the editors of the filter blog are the only ones involved in the judging, we saw no reason to forbid the Monday writers from entering. Reality is more important to us than appearances, and in reality, we are personal friends with many in the blog world. Should we ban them all from entering our contest?

We are confident that we are able to make objective decisions about the posts.

And no, we would not be red-faced at all. In fact, of the six prizes we have so far given, one has been won by a 3QD writer (Gerald Dworkin), and we are very happy with that.

Best wishes,

Abbas
