13 Things That Don’t Make Sense
William Leith in The Telegraph:
Why, Brooks asks, can’t physicists find a theory to explain how the universe works? Well, the universe contains particles, and these particles are guided by forces. The trouble is that the experts don’t really understand most of the forces and particles. “Almost all the universe is missing,” says Brooks. “Ninety-six per cent, to put a number on it.” Brooks surmises that there must be hugely powerful forces we don’t know about – or, to use the scientific term, “dark matter”. We know this – or, at least, we think we know this – because we don’t understand how gravity works.
Don’t we? Not really. In our solar system, we know that the Earth travels around the Sun faster than, say, Neptune for a simple reason: the Earth is closer, and is therefore subject to stronger gravitational force. But look at galaxies a little further out, and the same thing does not happen. In the Coma cluster of galaxies, objects at the edge are moving faster than they should. That must be because they are being held in place by something. Dark matter, almost certainly. Which might be just another way of saying, “we don’t know”.
Adding to the list of uncertainty, Brooks asks another question: what is life? Again, scientists don’t know. There are inanimate objects. And then there are living things. “But no scientist on Earth can tell you where the fundamental difference between these two states lies.” One definition might be that living things reproduce themselves. But then, so do some non-living things, such as computer viruses. And some living things, such as mules, do not.

They can't figure out how the universe works because how the universe works is beyond the realm of human intelligence. That's like asking how come an ant doesn't understand how to drive a car. The arrogance of some people, scientists in particular, never ceases to befuddle me. But God bless them. Until the end of time they will try to know the unknowable. It's what makes them kind of loveable in a way.

"And then there’s the strange case of homoeopathy. It shouldn’t work, because homeopathic solutions contain so little medicine they might as well contain none at all. But some experiments suggest that homeopathic remedies work better than placebos. Why? Well, we don’t understand that. But it might be because certain substances, even in tiny amounts, change the molecular structure of water. And water, it turns out, is much more complex, and less understood, than you might think."
Whoa.

Here I was, shaking my head, trying to figure out how to answer this post. Then I saw this comment. It's exactly right. I couldn't have said it better myself. :-)

If homeopathy is ever shown to work in any way beyond any shadow of reasonable scientific doubt (say the way Penicillin has been shown to work), including but not limited to any mechanisms involving changes to the molecular structure of water, I will personally send William Leith, the writer of this article $10,000.
That's a promise.
And that's what I think of nonsense like homeopathy.

I wouldn't call scientists arrogant at all. They just keep plodding on, and one has to admit that they have made remarkable progress in the last few centuries, forming and discarding paradigms as they go. The paradigms we use to understand the universe now will probably be discarded too, eventually.
I don't see how one can say with any confidence that the universe is beyond the reach of human intelligence, when we haven't stopped using our minds yet, and hopefully never will as long as we are around.

how the universe works is beyond the realm of human intelligence.
There's this really great trick: whenever someone claims that "X is unknowable", you simply ask how they know that this is so.
The person inevitably ends up having to specify (in a speculative fashion) the very sort of information they deny that we can come to know.
I love this trick.

I love how you can always find "some experiments" to suggest, and "some scientists" to postulate any stupid idea you want.

I don't think it so odd that scientists have difficulty finding dark matter in the universe. I lose things in my apartment, which is much smaller.

Reminds me of those like Dennett who deflect the problem of the P.E.Q by suggesting that the universe magically creates itself. So much for first causes, which everything else in science depends on.

We can all keep wondering about the mysteries of the universe but i believe that like some of the commenters had said, understand the universe is way beyond our intelligence and God made it that way.
Posted by: Jeffrey | Sep 8, 2009 5:09:57 PM
Disagree. God made it so that you can come to know him. And that answers all the questions.

A depressing thread, and a sad reflection on the human condition.

Wow, that's so sad. Who would be so alienated as to even come up with a word like that?

Carlos-
Those depressing Buddhists--
I'm off to read about the "Birds Of Heaven", the Cranes.

Hi, zeo, I wonder how will God's answer these question? I can't hear Him while I still in this world. So, why don't you asks it for me?

Thanks for writing about this. There’s a lot of important tech info on the internet. You’ve got a lot of that info here on your site. I’m impressed – I try to keep a couple blogs pretty on-going, but it’s a struggle sometimes. You’ve done a great job with this one. How do you do it?

Utopia
Island where all becomes clear.
Solid ground beneath your feet.
The only roads are those that offer access.
Bushes bend beneath the weight of proofs.
The Tree of Valid Supposition grows here
with branches disentangled since time immemorial.
The Tree of Understanding, dazzlingly straight and simple,
sprouts by the spring called Now I Get It.
The thicker the woods, the vaster the vista:
the Valley of Obviously.
If any doubts arise, the wind dispels them instantly.
Echoes stir unsummoned
and eagerly explain all the secrets of the worlds.
On the right a cave where Meaning lies.
On the left the Lake of Deep Conviction.
Truth breaks from the bottom and bobs to the surface.
Unshakable Confidence towers over the valley.
Its peak offers an excellent view of the Essence of Things.
For all its charms, the island is uninhabited,
and the faint footprints scattered on its beaches
turn without exception to the sea.
As if all you can do here is leave
and plunge, never to return, into the depths.
Into unfathomable life.

Water is a complex substance, but actually very well understood. It is disheartening to see this kind of misinformation passed off as science..
There are many unanswered questions in this universe, but to say we should not even try to understand and leave it all to some kind of supernatural "god" is silly, medieval and lazy.
Posted by: Bill | Feb 21, 2010 7:56:26 AM
I read the books (sorry, I can't remember the Author) and there was stated that our universe couldn't be done witout God. I agree with that.
Posted by: Johnson Matthey | Apr 21, 2010 4:18:03 AM
For me, even though I was brought up in a believing-in-'god' sect, it soon occurred to me that if you believe in an awesome 'god' that created the universe, it is rather blasphemous to believe that you understand 'god'. And yet, these believers are constantly stating that they know the wishes and opinions of 'god' on all kinds of things.
The attitude of scientists, namely to attempt to find out what we can about 'god's' creation is by far the more reverent.
Posted by: Alice de Tocqueville | Apr 21, 2010 1:40:51 PM
True enough that no one can figure out how the universe works because how the universe works is beyond the realm of human intelligence. We'd be mad if we attempt to.
Posted by: AbouttenBoom | Oct 14, 2010 7:24:23 AM
Don't be silly. We'd be mad, perhaps, if we thought we could complete the task. There is no do. There is only try.
Posted by: Carlos | Oct 14, 2010 8:31:26 AM
I agree with Carlos, we don't even know it is far beyond the realm of human intelligence. They only need enough time to figure it out. Although there is no limit on that time. All we need is to try and open for new ideas may come. Thumbs up to all scientists, continue to dream, believe and survive. May you find knowledge to figure it out.

The universe is so vast that no one can ever imagine. We are at 500+ million years traced and far from understanding. When this James Webb Telescope lunch, we will then a closer step understanding our universe. Thank you all scientist for patient and support to humanity.

Things do not make sense because common sense is very uncommon! or something like that, any way, it fails to make sense to me!

There is no need for humans to understand everything in order to make life on Earth much better than it is now. If we ever reached the point of understanding everything it would be devastating. Humans need a challenge to go on living.

We can keep wondering about the mysteries of the universe but maybe like some of the commenters said, understand the universe is way beyond our intelligence and God made it that way.
Posted by: karla | Aug 4, 2011 8:41:35 AM
It's scary to admit that things that don't make sense because we don't know how to make sense of them, we still have a long way to go before we begin to understand some of these things.

"One definition might be that living things reproduce themselves. But then, so do some non-living things, such as computer viruses."
Does a computer virus is alive?
Posted by: Sarouel | Jan 18, 2012 11:34:15 PM
Bad analogue. A computer virus cannot create a new computer. It is not alive.

well... if we don't know the answer yet... if must've been a god right. that's the logical conclusion one might draw. laughable.
