New 3QD columnists will be announced on December 8th

101054 Hello,

A few people have asked when the new columnists will be announced. Sorry for the delay, but we received more than 80 submissions, almost all of which are very good, and some quite lengthy. Each of the daily editors has been reading all the essays, so it has taken a little longer than we initially thought it would, but we have a shortlist now.

Because of the number of good submissions, we have decided to take more than three people on, but haven't decided on exactly how many yet. We are very excited and thankful to everyone who sent something in.

All best,

Abbas

(Mm, you are looking fantastically butch in plaid.) I'm so happy you got so many submissions, even if it makes selection onerous. Can't wait to see the results!

So am I, though mildly wistful. I proceeded to write what I thought was a masterful commentary on religion in US public and political life these days with reference matters ranging from President Reagan's misinterpretation of the "City on a Hill" sermon to the conceivably mildly cynical ostentatious piety of public figures. (Was Franklin Roosevelt much of an Anglican? Why did Eisenhower ostentatiously join the Presbyterian Church when he entered the White House? Did Johnson really quote Isaiah or only Bill Moyers quoting Isaiah? Was George HW Bush really born again? Why did Clinton drag around that Bible in public all the time? Such a masterful choice of denomination, the Congregationalists, for Obama.) Then I discovered on Youtube that Jonathan Miller had expounded on such matters to very similar effect on camera right off the top of his head some years back and I had qualms about inadvertent plagiarism like that of Doris Kearns Goodwin. Or perhaps just about being obvious.
