Last Call: 3 Quarks Daily is looking for 3 New Columnists
Dear Reader,
Here's your chance to say what you want to the international audience of highly educated readers that 3QD has! Several of our regular columnists have had to cut back, or even completely quit, their columns for 3QD because of other personal and professional commitments, and so we are looking for three new voices for our Monday columns. We cannot pay, but it is a good chance to draw attention to subjects you are interested in, and to get feedback from us and from our readers.
You would have a column published at 3QD every fourth Monday. It should generally be between 1000 and 2500 words and can be about any subject at all. To qualify for a Monday slot, please submit a sample column to me by email (s.abbas.raza at att.net) as an MS Word-compatible document, which I will then circulate to the other editors, and we will let you know our decision fairly quickly after we have a vote on it a fews days after November 15th. If you are given a slot on the 3QD schedule, your sample can also serve as your first column. Feel free to use pictures, graphs, or other illustrations in your column. Naturally, you retain full copyright over your writing.
To browse previous columns, go to our Mondays page.
Several of the people who started writing at 3QD have gone on to get regular paid gigs at well-known magazines. Even those who have not, have written to me saying that it has been a uniquely rewarding experience. If you have a blog or website of your own, please help us to spread this invitation by linking to this post. (This means you, Sean, Jennifer, Lindsay, Norm, Andrew, etc.)
The deadline for sample submissions is 11:59 PM, November 15, 2008, so start writing!
All best,
Abbas
P.S. We have more submissions than I thought we'd get, so it may take some time (at least a week, maybe a little longer) to announce who our new columnists are going to be.

Did I make this happen by being totally into my poodle for the nonce? Don't worry, I'm still here, togetherness in cyberspace being at all times a yeasty thing. But, Abbas, what a good idea -- we have the smartest readers on earth, many of whom write so well I feel I'm writing not just for their eyes but for their comments. I'm truly looking forward to seeing who's next.

Hey, no one offered me a regular paid gig at a well-known magazine! Oh well. You know I'm not in it for the money. (I'm in it for the semblance of immortality that comes with being stumbled-upon.)

Oh, y'all are going to get so many amazing submissions...and then to have to make a decision about who to pick! I don't envy you, as you have this unenviable task. Maybe you could put up some of the more impressive submissions, with the authors' permissions (is that compound posession?) or just post a bunch of essays. I don't know. Anyway, GOOD LUCK!

Hi Mr.Raja,
I am writing this for another reason:i am not getting any audio for last few days from any of the videos on your site. I have no such problem at any other site using the same computer and sound system.
By the way like to say you are doing a great job; keep it up. I admire you, your siblings and all the other talented writers of your site. While both my children always try to disuade me from this continued curiosity and feeling of , may be somewhat tribalistic kinships with people of acquired common roots of culture, language and space , could not help being proud of and bragging about you all. Thought I shall let you know. Ironically I live a very nontribal, religiously unaffiliated, maturely thoughtful life not feeling any presence or absence of god ; though know people talk, think and ponder about it. By "it" I mean the the word only and not it the thing.

Dear Abbas,
Would you consider extending the deadline?
CMI
Posted by: CriticalMassI | Nov 10, 2008 2:52:11 PM
By how much?
Posted by: Abbas Raza | Nov 10, 2008 3:07:35 PM
How about by a liberal amount?
Every time I think I've got 1,000 words wrapped up, I start contemplating the immortality of Dr. Wicked Wit Justin E. H. Smith, and it destroys my confidence.

Dear Critical,
I think it's rather obvious that it is not a good sign for a potential columnist to be asking for deadline extensions even BEFORE they are a columnist! :-)
Nevertheless, I share your fear of Justin Smith, and just because I started this site and can do such things, I grant ONLY YOU a one week extension. Is this unfair? Of course! But sometimes it's nice to be boss! Heh, heh... :-)
You'd better get something good in though!
We will announce the new columnists on the 17th of November. (And wait to see if CM1 makes it as an additional columnist the next week...)
Thanks to all the many, many people who have submitted things. We really appreciate it, and we've received some very good writing.
Yours,
Abbas

Kind regards,

Any news when the new columnists will be announced?
Posted by: Joshua Craze | Dec 1, 2008 9:13:21 AM
Yeah, Joshua, we'll do it next Monday, the 8th.
I'll put a post up about it, since a few people have asked.
