sean penn anti-ode

Sean_penn

Must Sean Penn always look like he’s squeezing
the last drops out of a sponge and the sponge
is his face? Even the back of his head grimaces.
Just the pressure in his little finger alone
could kill a gorilla. Remember that kid
whose whole trick was forcing blood into his head
until he looked like the universe’s own cherry bomb
so he’d get the first whack at the piñata?
He’s grown up to straighten us all out
about weapons of mass destruction
but whatever you do, don’t ding his car door with yours.
Don’t ask about his girlfriend’s cat.

Few performances in recent movie history are as overrated, in my estimation, as Sean Penn's in Mystic River. All that scenery chewing, third generation method over-acting: "Is that my daughter in tha-yer!" "Is that my daughter in tha-yer!"

he is a ridiculous one note hammy over the top no range actor who somehow gets accolades. he's too ugly and short to be a leading man, too scene stealing to be a good character actor, so he's worthless. he was good early on in his career and now he's a joke. his performance in mystic river AND all the king's men are laugh out loud HAM. pathetic.

To first commenter - I'd rather let storms be storms and actors be actors. Sean Penn's not a completely terrible actor but I often feel he gets too much credit just for being able to be intense. I have a theory his performances get so much credit more because they're attention-grabbing than for any other reason. It frustrates me. It's like if your next-door neighbor ran his car into the side of your house every morning on his way to work and you exclaimed 'Wow, what an amazing, powerful driver! That sure blew my mind!'
