Controversy over the New Britney Spears Sculpture

Daniel Edwards' sculpture of Britney Spears giving birth has sparked controversy in all corners, in the BBC.

A nude sculpture depicting singer Britney Spears giving birth to her son has prompted a flood of emails from both pro-choice and anti-abortionists.

Monument to Pro-Life: The Birth of Sean Preston will be unveiled at New York's Capla Kesting Art gallery in April.

Gallery co-owner David Kesting said they had received 3,000 emails, some from "pro-life" supporters who thought it was degrading to their movement.

He added that other people were "upset" the sculpture was a pro-life monument.

The life-size work, by artist Daniel Edwards, features Spears crouched on all fours on a bear-skin rug as she gives birth.

It will be displayed at the gallery alongside a display case filled with anti-abortion materials.

When I first read this I was SURE it was actually a pro-choice sculpture meant to provoke pro-lifers, since I think it's conventional wisdom that Britney Spears should not reproduce (i.e. a "be careful what you wish for" message) and the bear-skin rug represents her extravagance and shallowness.

After reading about the artist's admiration of Spears, I'm not so sure.

Looks to me like a beautiful and provacative work of art -- a coup for the artist, actually -- a Manet's "Olympia" for our time. It's captured the space where art, celebrity culture, and morality politics meet. The whole thing: subject, posture, mode of display, is powerfully original. My hat goes off to the artist. What no one seems able to tell me, however, is what medium it's sculpted in. I'd like to know.

When discussing this at work this morning I commented to a friend while looking at the front view that it didn't look like her. Without missing a beat my colleague said "turn it around and see if you recognize her then."

Well...There is a much deeper connotation that the artist is trying to convay. In my personal opinion , I believe that Britney (which i am a BIG fan of ) is an object of transformation from the sexy pop singer to the "wise" mom that she is now . The artist is tryinh to show that inner conflict and that transition that this -basicly- is a young girl whose conflict is illustrated by a bear screaming that hard modification . And as we see the line that the curi-line that the sculpture shows reminds us of the life cycle , and plus her face is much more thinner than her body so that it seems that she has a body of a pregnant futur mother but the spirit of a young full of life woman .

Do you think an artist should make a likeness of a celebrity without their permission and then use that likeness to promote an agenda? I do not.

I DON'T WANT TO SEEM CRASS, AND OR VULGAR, BUT HAS ANYONE SEEN THE REAR OF THIS SCULPTURE?..... IF YOU HAVE, AND HAVE TAKEN IMAGES OF ALL FOUR SIDES OF IT, WOULD THERE BE ANYWAY, I COULD ASK FOR SOMEONE TO SEND TO ME A IMAGE OF WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE FROM THE REAR?.... AS I AM NOT GOING TO BE ABLE TO GO TO NEW YORK, [AS OF NOW] TO BE ABLE TO VIEWS THIS SCULPTURE, THAT IS SO CONTROVERSIAL...

I wish you perfect American would just live your lives and stop nocking others, leave the lady alone, Remember the one of you who has not sinned cast the first STONE. If most of you were born a couple of hundred years ago, you were more then likely burning people alive.
