Effigy Tumuli
I've become more and more obsessed with the Earthworks movement in art. Michael Heizer, whose City was profiled by Michael Kimmelman at the Times a few weeks ago and linked here at 3Quarks, has been one of its most important practitioners.
Another of his projects, Effigy Tumuli, is one of the largest sculptures in the world. It's at the Buffalo Rock State Park in Illinois. It's based on the ancient Mound Building practices of various Native American tribes.

I'm sorry but I don't like Heizer at all.
Upon seeing a dry lake bed in the Nevada desert where, because there is no wind or rain, each moving thing leaving its mark and therefore it is obvious that no human had walked across the lake bed for hundreds or thousands of years, Heizer decided to drive his motorcycle in circles to leave his mark, effectively pissing on the planet. He is an ass. There are far better representatives of the land art movement.

I'm sorry that comment was too harsh. Turrell needs the size of the Roden Crater to speak about the atmosphere, your perceptions, our situation here on earth, Smithson taps into the worlds of chemistry, and archaeology as well as the here and now (and was the originator of land re-purposing I believe). Both of these men treat their suject with awe, whereas Heizer seems only able to say, "I have a penis", "I dig big holes", "I move big rocks". Everything else he does smacks of "me too"-ism.
