3QD Reader Survey Results

The results of our reader survey (139 people responded) show roughly that:

  • Most people want us to put up as many interesting items as we can find on a given day, but a significant minority wants only 1-5 posts at most.
  • A great majority of people prefer the posts to be more than a sentence or two, but less than a screenful.
  • Most people seem to like the pictures in the posts.
  • Many people would like more original commentary from us, though about a quarter of respondents want the site to stay the same.
  • Most people like the Monday column, but only a small number would like to see more such features.

In addition, a significant number of people left very helpful suggestions and comments, of which my personal favorite was:

  • I love you and would like your hand(s) in marriage.

Many thanks to all of you for taking the time to tell us what you want, and for all the encouragement. We are always suckers for flattery.

I think it's unnecessary and unimaginative to link to as many NYT articles as you do.

I can say a few things in my own defense:

1) The NYT often does have high quality articles/book reviews/other features with intellectual depth, no matter what one may think of its news coverage (and we don't generally link to newsy things or op-eds, etc.).

2) It may seem to Americans, and specially New Yorkers, that everyone already reads the NYT and knows what's in it. What's the point of posting stuff from there? Well, we have a lot of readers in Europe/Asia/Africa/Australia, and they probably aren't as regular readers of the NYT, and it might be worth drawing their attention to stuff in it (just as Americans don't read The Guardian all that much).

3) I don't really care where stuff comes from, as long as it is well-written and intellectually stimulating. My aim is not to ferret out only items from obscure sources, but to find everything that is good, and believe it or not, sometimes there are very good things in the mainstream media.

But thanks for your honest opinion.

I think that is okay. Indeed, we could always see articles from The Guardian etc.

"we don't generally link to newsy things..."

i'm not sure i understand where news ends and "culture" begins. just because they are different sections in newspapers doesn't mean we have to treat them as such.
